The EU Cross-Border Healthcare Directive allows EU citizens to access healthcare in any EU country and to be reimbursed for care abroad by their home country.

Every Irish citizen is eligible to use the Cross-Border Directive, regardless of whether you have health insurance or a medical card. You do not need to be on a waiting list. This scheme is open to anyone who would be entitled to treatment in an Irish hospital. All you need is a referral letter from your GP.

It can take up to 16 weeks after submitting your completed application and all required documentation.
